Conceptual design of a sunglass inspired by “Casa Vicens” Gaudí's first great work

4 JUNE 2020
We have set out to do what we like the most, explore new ideas, explain older ones, share processes, and carry out conceptual design exercises so that all those impossible or fleeting ideas see the light and do not stay in a drawer hidden in our Barcelona study.
About the “Casa Vicens”, the first great work of Gaudí.
Casa Vicens is a modernist building located in Barcelona, on Carrer de las Carolinas 18-24 (Gracia district). Work of Antoni Gaudí, it was the first important project of the architect after his degree as an architect in 1878. Gaudí was commissioned in 1880 by Manuel Vicens i Montaner for a second summer residence for the family, owner of a ceramic factory. This is evident in the facade of the property, whose decoration is based precisely on tiles. Gaudí was at that time in the first period of his career, characterized by the use of an architectural language of great constructive simplicity, in which the straight line prevails over the curved line. Stylistically it corresponds to a stage of orientalist influence, where the structural and ornamental forms correspond to the taste for oriental art, mainly Mudejar, Persian and Byzantine, as can be seen in other works of his such as the Güell Pavilions, the Güell Cellars or El Capricho de Comillas . Currently the house is renovated, can be visited and is promoted by the Casa Vicens Gaudí organization.
A concept inspired by a unique work.
La Casa Vicens is a house that does not leave you indifferent, you can spend every day in front of it to go to work, but its colors and compositions make you unable to take your eyes off it. Playing with these geometric shapes and inspired by these mixtures of colors and materials, a concept has emerged that wants to pay tribute to this beautiful work of the great Architect Antoní Gaudí.
The glasses are a mixture of steel coated with PVD and covered with lacquered surfaces and engraved in geometric motifs inspired directly from the house. Its colors are extracted from the facade of the house to become an oversized, sophisticated and striking sunglasses.
